HomeGuide's national figures are $350–$850 for an average room and $3,500–$10,000 for a whole interior (HomeGuide (opens in a new tab), checked September 2026). Our room and whole-home starting prices sit inside those bands. The difference between a cheap quote and a good one is usually in the prep, so read the scope, not only the total.

What drives the cost of interior painting

Prep and the state of the walls

Most bad paint jobs are prep problems: nail holes skimmed instead of filled, glossy trim painted without a scuff, patches that flash through because nobody spot-primed them. Prep is the longest phase of our jobs. Walls in good shape go quickly; walls with years of dents, cracks and old patches take longer. Larger damage, such as water stains, failed tape or holes bigger than a fist, is quoted as drywall repair, which we also do in-house.

What gets painted

Walls only is the fastest scope. Ceilings add a second surface in every room. Trim, doors and frames are the slowest work in the house, because they are cut in by hand and finished in enamel, and that is the step from $4,800–$8,000 to $7,000–$12,000 on a typical home. Sprayed enamel on trim, doors and cabinetry is part of the premium finish.

Color changes

We always apply two coats, with primer wherever a surface was repaired or is changing color dramatically. Going from a dark accent wall to a pale neutral takes that extra primer; repainting close to the existing color does not.

Height and access

Vaulted ceilings, stairwells and crown molding need ladders, planks and more time than a standard 8 ft room. They are included in a whole-home price, but they move where in the range that price lands.

The paint

Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore are our standard. If you want a specific line such as Emerald, Aura or Duration, we price it. We do not substitute cheaper paint after the quote is signed.

Specialty finishes

Limewash, venetian plaster and high-gloss walls sit in the premium tier from $8,500, together with Level 5 wall prep that leaves a surface glass-smooth under raking light and sprayed enamel on trim, doors and cabinetry. The premium tier also includes an in-home color consultation with large-format samples, because a color judged from a small chip can read quite differently across a whole wall in LA light.

Older homes

Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. Sanding or scraping more than six square feet of painted surface in a room brings in the federal Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, and the work has to be done lead-safe by a certified firm (EPA (opens in a new tab), checked September 2026). We are an EPA Lead-Safe certified firm. Popcorn ceilings installed before 1980 in California may contain asbestos; the Encino ceilings tested negative before we scraped and skimmed all 2,400 square feet.

How long it takes

About a day per room, and four to seven days for a full home. We finish one room before opening up the next and use low-VOC paint, so most clients stay in the house throughout. If we are spraying cabinetry or running a whole home on a tight schedule, you hear up front which two or three days are the disruptive ones.

Each room runs in the same order. Floors covered, furniture moved to the center and wrapped, fixtures masked. Then holes filled, cracks bridged, glossy surfaces scuffed and every repair spot-primed. Color goes on in two full coats, cut in by hand at the ceiling line and rolled tight to the trim, with trim finished last. Every tool and drop cloth is out of the way before we leave for the day, and leftover paint is labeled and left with you for touch-ups.

How to keep interior painting cost down

  • Paint the house in one pass. A full interior from $4,800 works out far cheaper per room than booking rooms one at a time, because setup, color matching and cleanup happen once.
  • Stay close to your current colors. A dramatic color change needs primer under the two coats; a similar color does not.
  • Take the small things down yourself. We move and cover furniture, but clearing pictures, shelves and ornaments before we arrive shortens the prep day.
  • Leave out what does not need it. Closets and cabinet interiors are optional; if they are in good shape, skip them.
  • Stay on the standard lines. Our standard Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore products are premium paint already; specialty lines are priced on request.

Getting a fixed price

We measure the space, check every surface, flag anything that needs repair before paint and send a written fixed price the same day. At the end we walk every wall with you under a raking light and fix anything you are not happy with before the crew packs up. See the full scope on our interior painting page and the Encino repaint on our work page.
