Vinyl fence prices in Los Angeles
We price new fencing per linear foot, including posts, concrete, hardware and haul-away of the old fence. Height and material set the rate: our new fencing runs $45–$75 per linear foot installed, and vinyl sits at the upper end of that range.
| Fence | Installed price | 100 ft back yard |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl privacy fence | Upper end of $45–$75 / linear ft | Upper end of $4,500–$7,500 |
| Wood fence: cedar, redwood or pine | $45–$75 / linear ft | $4,500–$7,500 |
| Repairs to an existing fence | Priced per job | Usually $650–$1,800 |
| Stain or paint an existing wood fence | From $8.50 / linear ft | From $850 |
| Real job, for comparison: Woodland Hills cedar | 220 ft, 6 ft high, two gates, four days | $11,400 in total |
Nationally, HomeGuide reports $30–$60 per linear foot installed for vinyl, or $6,000–$12,000 for 200 feet (HomeGuide (opens in a new tab), checked September 2026). Our per-foot number includes posts set to depth in concrete and removal of the old fence, so check that any lower quote includes the same before you compare.
What drives the cost of a vinyl fence
Length and height
The per-foot rate multiplies across every foot of the run, and height moves the rate itself: a 6 ft privacy fence uses more material per foot and needs deeper posts than a low front fence. Measure the actual line, including the returns to the house, before comparing quotes.
Style
Solid privacy panels, semi-privacy with gaps and open picket all price differently. Privacy panels use the most material; picket the least. Decorative tops and lattice add to the panel price.
Gates
Every gate is a heavier post, hinges, a latch and more labor than the same length of panel. Gates are built with proper bracing and hardware so they do not sag in year two, and a driveway gate is a different job from a side-yard walk gate.
Posts, soil and slope
A fence fails from the ground up. We set posts at least two feet deep in concrete over a gravel base, deeper for six-foot fences or loose soil, and crown the concrete so water runs away from the post. Rocky ground and tree roots slow the digging. On a slope, panels are stepped to follow the grade, which adds cutting and fitting time.
Removal of the old fence
Tearing out the old fence and hauling it away is included in our per-foot price. The failed fence in Woodland Hills had posts set 14 inches deep straight into dirt, and every one had rotted at grade. If a quote leaves removal out, add it back before you compare.
Property line, utilities and permits
Before we dig we confirm where the property line actually sits, locate underground utilities, and check your city's height and setback rules for your address. Taller fences, front-yard fences and corner lots with visibility rules are where permits usually come in. The limits differ from city to city, so we check before quoting rather than after building.
Vinyl or wood: the cost over time
Vinyl costs more on install day than most wood fences. What it saves is upkeep. In LA, UV is what kills wood fences far more than rain, and a wood fence wants re-staining every three to four years. At our starting rate of $8.50 per linear foot, that is from $850 each time on a 100-foot run, two or three times a decade.
HomeGuide puts the life of a vinyl fence at 20 to 30 years on average, depending on climate, soil and maintenance (HomeGuide (opens in a new tab), checked September 2026). A wood fence with properly set posts and regular stain lasts a long time too; the cedar fence in Woodland Hills was built to stand twenty years. The honest comparison is the install price plus a decade of maintenance, not the install price alone.
How to keep vinyl fence installation cost down
- Split a boundary fence with your neighbor. California law presumes adjoining owners share the reasonable cost of a dividing fence equally unless they agree otherwise in writing, and asks for 30 days' written notice before you incur the cost (California Civil Code 841 (opens in a new tab), checked September 2026).
- Choose a standard height and panel style. Plain privacy or picket panels at common heights cost less than decorative tops and lattice.
- Keep gates to the ones you use. Each gate costs more than the same length of panel.
- Repair what is sound. If the posts on a wood fence are solid and only pickets or rails have failed, a repair usually runs $650–$1,800. If more than about a third of the posts are rotted or leaning, replacement is the cheaper answer.
- Replace the whole run at once. One teardown, one delivery and one set of post holes cost less than the same fence built in three stages.
Getting a price for your fence
We walk the fence line with you, confirm the property line, check the city's height limits for your setback and note anything, such as slope, roots or utilities, that changes how it has to be built. New fencing takes two to four days; repairs usually one.
The order on site is simple. The old fence comes out and is hauled away, utilities are located before any digging, and post holes go down to depth over a gravel base. Posts are set plumb in concrete and left to cure before panels and gates go on, and gates are hung and adjusted so they latch cleanly. The site is raked clean and every offcut leaves with us.
